The reason for the space is that the stove can ignite materials within a certain range that are combustibles due to radiant heat. Paper for instance is 451F. The ceramic spacers are code since they have a hard time to transfering heat. Copper is a great conductor of heat. I'd change those. Since that's a steel stove it will radiate heat very well.
